High-performance, ecofriendly, and sustainable aluminium

THE CARBON BORDER ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM (CBAM)

PCP Aluminium places sustainability at the heart of its strategy. GHG emissions are rigorously monitored and processes are optimized to maintain a carbon intensity below the CBAM reference values.

Result : our products are below European regulatory thresholds, without risk of additional carbon costs for our customers.

The CBAM aims to impose a fair carbon pricing on products imported into the EU, taking into account their actual carbon footprint.

For the aluminium sector, the CBAM establishes carbon intensity reference values to serve as a basis for comparison between producers :

Aluminum type Carbon intensity
CBAM limit
Carbon intensity
PCP Aluminium
Primary aluminum 10.50 t CO2 / tonne of al. 5.88 t CO2 / tonne of al.
Processed aluminum 12.11 t CO2 / tonne of al. 6.02 t CO2 / tonne of al.

A CONTROLLED CARBON FOOTPRINT

Renewable energy is the core of Canada’s electrical grid. Over 95% is based on hydroelectric dams or windmills. Therefore, our electric furnaces ensure the minimalist carbon footprint in the industry.

Our remelt processes are mainly electric, with some natural gas assistance in certain cases. Both perform significantly below international scenarios or reference points.

Our approach to the GHG Protocol is in accordance with the monitoring of scopes 1 and 2

COMPLIANCE WITH THE CBAM

Thanks to the efficiency of its remelting processes and rigorous energy management, PCP achieves a carbon intensity of 1.61 t CO2 per tonne of aluminum, well below the CBAM reference values.

This performance guarantees our European customers :

  • Easy compliance
  • Sustainable competitive advantage

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

As the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) evolves, PCP Aluminium is committed to supporting our customers through the transition.

For imports from Canada to the European Union in 2026, CBAM reports will be due by September 30, 2027. Until the EU finalizes the accreditation of third-party verifiers, importers will need to use the default emissions values.

For our products:

  • Default value for primary aluminium (HS code 7606): 3.025 t CO₂e/t
  • Benchmark subtraction allowed for clients: 1.485 t CO₂e/t for primary aluminium

Using verified emissions data instead of default values can lower the effective carbon cost of our products. PCP is actively working toward independent verification and is preparing all necessary documentation, including Monitoring Plans, Annual Emissions Reports, and Verification Statements, to support our customers once verifiers are accredited.
